About me

Allan Borushek is a clinical nutritionist and health educator with over 30 years experience.

Allan has formal degrees in biochemistry and clinical nutrition and dietetics from the University of WA and Royal Perth Hospital. Allan is a member of several professional societies and organizations - as shown below.

After several years working in hospital medical dietetic clinics,  Allan established the first WA private practice clinic in medical nutrition and dietetics in 1970 with referrals from GPs and medical specialists (such as cardiologists, endocrinologists, obesity clinics, surgeons).

Allan is best known as 'The Calorie King' for his best-selling Calorie, Fat & Carbohydrate Counter books whose annual editions have sold over 18 million books in Australia and USA.  He has also authored other popular books on weight control, diabetes and heart disease prevention - as listed below.

Allan is also known for his free online food nutrition databases under the CalorieKing banner (website and apps). People can search for all their favorite foods whether generic, brands or fast-foods.

Allan is the recipient of an Advance Australia Award for nutrition and health education services to community - as well as a winner of the National Health Information Awards in USA.

Allan’s nutrition therapy approach is a truly integrative and personalized one that considers the client’s medical history, blood tests, current prescription medications, environmental exposures, socio-economic status, as well as their food likes and dislikes.

Nutrition and lifestyle recommendations are provided to the client’s doctors and healthcare team where appropriate - particularly where medication dosage may need to be tapered down to match the improvement in metabolic health of the client.

Allan’s food philosophy is based on eating a wide variety of nutritious whole foods that are minimally processed and prepared in a healthy manner. Eating local produce that is in season is also encouraged.

So-called ultra-processed foods are emphatically discouraged no matter what type of diet style you follow (omnivore, vegetarian, vegan etc). Such foods tend to be overly laden with refined carbohydrates, sugar, salt, omega-6 seed oils (that readily oxidize and overbalance healthy omega-3 fats) - as well as food additives and emulsifiers.

When consumed regularly, ultra-processed foods can promote gut and metabolic dysregulation that is linked to our chronic modern-day diseases - such as obesity, diabetes, fatty liver, heart and kidney disease, gut disorders, osteoporosis, neurodegenerative and even mental health.

Allan follows the holistic, integrative principles of digging deep to find the root cause of the client’s symptoms and disease patterns. The physiological rationale for dietary recommendations is explained in simple terms to the client - who is then more likely to be motivated to adhere to the recommendations.

Even when genetic factors may load the gun, it is environmental factors (including diet and lifestyle) that can ultimately pull the trigger and initiate inflammation and organ damage. Eliminating or modifying those damaging environmental triggers can be sufficient to ameliorate or prevent expression of any genetic predispositions to disease.

Important Client Notes & Disclaimer

*While a change to healthy nutrition habits can improve many medical conditions, any nutrition advice is intended to complement and not to replace the medical advice of your medical team.

*It is important to maintain regular contact with your doctor(s) - particularly where improvements in your medical condition may necessitate a change in drug medication dosage (or even deprescription).

*A referral from your doctor is required when you are on prescribed drug medications. This allows communication directly with your doctor(s) on the dietary prescription, nutrition supplements and medication questions.

*While drug medications can create nutritional deficiencies, nutrition supplements can also adversely interact with medications. Hence, the need to keep your doctor informed and to discuss any recommended nutrition supplements before commencing them.
